Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday said Pakistan was playing a role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran amid rising tensions in West Asia, but suggested that India could emerge as a long-term mediator due to its diplomatic experience.
In Delhi to attend theBRICSSummit, Lavrov said Pakistan was currently helping establish channels of communication between Washington and Tehran to address “urgent problems.” However, he added that if both sides were looking for a sustained or long-term mediator, India could be well suited for the role.
“If they seek a long-term mediator, this role could be played by India, considering its vast diplomatic experience,” Lavrov said, while addressing a press conference.
The remarks come at a time when global attention remains focused on efforts to reduce tensions between Iran and the US following months of instability in the region. Pakistan has recently been seen playing an active intermediary role between Tehran and Washington amid ongoing backchannel diplomacy.
During his latest visit, Lavrov held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on regional and global issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy remain the best path forward in resolving international conflicts.
