More than 500 athletes from 50 teams gathered in Massapequa on May 5 to compete in the 56th annual Special Olympics New York Long Island Region Spring Games, with most events held at the athletic fields of Berner Middle School.
The event, presented by Northwell Health in partnership with the Massapequa School District and the Town of Oyster Bay, brought together athletes, coaches, volunteers, and spectators for a day centered on competition and inclusion.
Trent Hampton, one of the participants had this to say about the event:
“As a Special Olympics Athlete it beings joy to my soul to participate and advocate for athletes with disabilities across the state. I am also honored to be a proud representative of the Long Island running community and Special Olympics New York Long Island Region.”
“I had a great day at the special Olympics spring games,” said Ben Beavers, another athlete. “I won second place in the relay and second place in 800 meters and first place in 1500 meters and my girlfriend …took first place in 50 meters and third place in relay and everyone did a great job.
