A police pursuit that began with an investigation in Port Washington on Wednesday afternoon ended with a crash near the Americana Manhasset shopping center, multiple damaged vehicles and a juvenile suspect facing attempted murder and other charges, authorities said.

The incident began around 12:30 p.m. when Port Washington police officers conducting an investigation on North Bayles Avenue attempted to stop a suspect. Police said the individual fled, triggering a pursuit through Port Washington and Manhasset, Nassau County police said.

During the chase, at least one shot was fired, according to published reports. Authorities have not released details about who fired the shot or what prompted the gunfire.

The pursuit ended roughly 30 minutes later in the parking lot of the Americana Manhasset shopping center on Northern Boulevard after the suspect crashed, police said. Officials said the fleeing driver caused multiple collisions during the chase.

“The individual fled the scene and caused multiple vehicle accidents, which culminated in the accident we see behind here at Americana Mall,” Nassau County Police Chief of Department Christopher Ferro said. “That individual responsible for this accident, multiple accidents, was apprehended and is in custody.”

Police said the crime scene extended across several locations along Searingtown Road and Port Washington Boulevard in both Port Washington and Manhasset. Northern Boulevard near the shopping center, between Searingtown Road and The Gate at Manhasset, remained closed until about 9 p.m., according to Nassau County police.

Nassau County police said the juvenile suspect was charged with second-degree attempted murder, second-degree grand larceny, second-degree reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.

Paul D. Schreiber High School and Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School were briefly on a lockout, which was lifted at 1 p.m.

Authorities did not release the juvenile’s identity.

The suspect was scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
