President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping held their first in-person meeting on Thursday in Beijing, marking a significant moment in US-China relations. The day combined elaborate ceremonial displays with substantive private talks, setting the tone for the two-day summit.
New Framework for US-China Relations
Xi and Trump agreed to build a “constructive, strategically stable relationship” — a new phrasing to guide future ties between the world’s two largest economies. Xi described it as based on “cooperation and measured competition with healthy stability.” China said it would treat this framework as a guide for the next three years and beyond. The White House did not reference the specific term in its statement.
Taiwan Emerges as the Most Critical Issue
Xi was direct and firm on Taiwan, calling it the “most critical matter” in US-China relations. He urged Trump to exercise “extreme caution” and warned that mishandling the issue could push relations into a “very dangerous situation.” The White House notably made no mention of Taiwan in its official readout of the meeting.
Trade and Business Deals Take Center Stage
China expressed strong interest in purchasing more US agricultural products, energy, and up to 200 Boeing 737 Max jets. Xi told the American business delegation that “China’s door will only open wider” and welcomed stronger cooperation. Trump highlighted the presence of top US executives, including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, saying they were there to “pay respects” to China.
The war in Iran was mentioned as one of the global issues on the agenda. Both sides agreed the Strait of Hormuz should remain a free waterway and that Iran should not develop nuclear weapons. China expressed interest in increasing purchases of US oil to reduce dependence on supplies traveling through the strait.
Personal Chemistry and Cultural Symbolism
The day was filled with personal touches, with Trump and Xi exchanging pats and friendly remarks. Trump repeatedly praised Xi as a “great leader” and emphasized their “fantastic relationship.” Beijing arranged symbolic cultural elements, including a welcome by schoolchildren and a joint visit to the historic Temple of Heaven.
