For the second year in a row, the Sayville girls varsity golf team completed its regular season undefeated after going 12-0 against local schools this spring, capturing the League 3 Championship and heading to the Suffolk County Championship in the coming days.
Team coach Sean Piotrowski said the group maintained its undefeated track record through a mix of experienced leadership and emerging talent, allowing not just for repeated success, but also for the reinforcement of the team’s culture of excellence.
“We had a solid team, and it was a great group of kids,” Piotrowski said of the spring 2026 Sayville girls varsity golf team.
Piotrowski credits part of the team’s success to the players’ dedication to the sport, with many playing year-round at courses such as West Sayville Golf Course, which allows the team to practice. Additionally, the team received support from golf professional Robert Callioras, whom Piotrowski said was generous with his help.
At the team’s center was senior captain Meghan McMackin, who has been a part of the varsity team since seventh grade and plans to continue playing golf at SUNY Geneseo next fall.
McMackin led the league with a 39.1 average, which she earned through her work ethic and offseason improvement, Piotrowski said. Along with her personal success, Piotrowski said McMackin mentors younger players, especially those in middle school or who have limited golf experience.
“Meg is really leading by example,” Piotrowski said. “She hits the ball very well. She has really good technique. So just her being around the other players really is a great example of how to represent Sayville golf.”
The team as a whole melded well in their roles, Piotrowski said. Sisters Ava and Mia Schutte, both captains, held down the second and third positions and earned All-League honors, according to Piotrowski.
Seventh-grader Adelyn Folks, in the fourth spot, also earned All-League recognition, with her rapid development and composure making her a standout player with a bright future ahead, Piotrowski said.
“She had a tremendous season, being her first year on the team,” Piotrowski said.
