New Delhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met foreign ministers attending theBRICSForeign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, as the grouping gathered against the backdrop of escalating global conflicts, deepening geopolitical tensions, and growing calls for a multipolar world order.
Among those who called on PM Modi were Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
The high-profile meeting comes at a time when several nations represented in New Delhi are either directly involved in conflicts or are navigating the fallout of ongoing wars and geopolitical rivalries. Russia remains locked in the prolonged Ukraine conflict, while Iran is facing heightened tensions with the United States and Israel after months of turmoil in West Asia.
While the official agenda focused on cooperation, sustainability, technology, and global governance reforms, the gathering quickly turned into a platform for sharp geopolitical messaging - particularly from Iran.
Addressing the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi launched a scathing attack on Washington, accusing the United States of “bullying” and warning against the behaviour of what he described as “empires in decline.”
“Those who pursue reckless adventures may believe it furthers their geopolitical interests. But as consumers and governments around the world now sense and understand, regional instability is a lose-lose proposition for all sides, including the aggressors,” Araghchi said.
The Iranian minister framed Tehran’s confrontation with Washington as part of a broader struggle many countries could relate to.
“To virtually everyone in this room, our resistance against US bullying is not an unfamiliar battle. So many of us encounter slight variations of the same repugnant coercion,” he said.
Calling for greater unity among BRICS nations, Araghchi added that it was “high time” for countries to coordinate more closely and make it clear that such practices “belong in the dustbin of history.”
In one of the strongest lines of his speech, the Iranian foreign minister appeared to directly target the United States without naming it explicitly.
