After Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma is set to overtake MS Dhoni in the list of players to play the most IPL matches. Rohit, who will be in action for Mumbai Indians (MI) against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday (May 14), will be playing his 279th IPL match. Dhoni has played 278 IPL matches so far. Virat Kohli went past Dhoni on Wednesday (May 13) to become the most-capped player in IPL history. Rohit will move to the top spot and will become the joint-most capped player in IPL's history when he takes the field against PBKS.
Dhoni, who had 278 IPL caps before the start of the IPL 2026, hasn't played a game in the ongoing season. He was initially ruled out for two weeks due to a calf strain.

Rohit Sharma is one of the three players, along with Kohli and Manish Pandey, to play in every IPL season played thus far. He kicked off his IPL journey with Deccan Chargers (DC) and played for them in the first three seasons.
After releasing him, DC tried to re-sign Rohit in theIPL2011 mega-auction but missed out. He joined MI in the mega-auction and has been playing for them since then.
After taking over as MI's captain in the middle of IPL 2013, Rohit captained them to their maiden IPL title. Rohit-led MI emulated their success in IPL 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He was sacked and replaced by Hardik Pandya before IPL 2024.
Despite being sacked, Rohit stayed with MI before the IPL 2025 mega-auction. With 7289 runs in 273 innings, Rohit sits in the second spot in the list of batters with the most IPL runs. Virat Kohli tops the elite list with 9145 runs. His tally includes 9 centuries and 66 fifties.
