Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled ten new initiatives, including the ambitious “Safe City” project for Delhi, featuring thousands of AI-enabled cameras and a targeted 75-80% conviction rate in the criminal justice system, during the Delhi Police Raising Day event in GTB Nagar on Monday, February 16.
The Safe City project will integrate around 2,100 AI-enabled cameras into operations soon, forming part of a broader network of 10,000 cameras. Additionally, 15,000 existing cameras across the city will be incorporated to bolster public safety. The Delhi Police Special Cell’s integrated headquarters will play a pivotal role in counter-terror operations under this initiative.
Addressing the gathering, Shah highlighted the transformation in India's internal security landscape. He noted that prior to 2014, the country grappled with severe challenges in Kashmir, the North East, and Maoist-affected areas. “Around 80 per cent of these issues have now been brought under control,” he stated, adding that the government is on the verge of completely eliminating Maoist violence, with a goal to make India free from Maoist threats by March 31, 2024.
Shah praised the Delhi Police for their unwavering commitment, saying, “Delhi Police has managed to save the country on several fronts...” He commended their efforts in safeguarding Delhi and the national capital region, citing successful handling of complex cases such as the Parliament attack and a recent bomb blast near Red Fort.
Turning to judicial reforms, the Home Minister outlined plans to modernize India’s criminal justice system into the world’s most advanced. “Conviction rate projected to rise from current levels to 75-80%,” he said. States like Assam, Haryana, and Gujarat have already achieved conviction rate increases of over 20%, with further integration of judiciary and prosecution pending.
