In a significant blow to the Congress party just ahead of the Assam Assembly polls, former state unit president Bhupen Kumar Borah has resigned from his position, sources confirmed. Borah, who led the Assam Congress from 2021 to 2025, cited being sidelined by the party leadership and the high-handedness of his successor, Gaurav Gogoi, as key reasons for his decision.

Borah submitted his resignation letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and also wrote directly to Rahul Gandhi. In the letter, he expressed frustration over being ignored by the party high command and not receiving his due recognition within the state unit. "I had informed the high command about how the party was functioning in the state and that the situation had affected my self-esteem and dignity," Borah stated in the communication, according to sources.

The resignation specifically blames the policies, high-handedness, and favouritism of Gaurav Gogoi, who replaced Borah as Assam Congress president last year. Borah, a two-time legislator in Assam, had been anticipated to contest from the newly formed Ranganodi constituency in the upcoming elections.

Prior to his exit, Borah was also poised to engage in discussions with opposition parties to forge an alliance. However, reports indicate that the inclusion of MP Rockybul Hussain in the team sparked discontent among party members, contributing to the internal tensions.

This development comes at a critical juncture for the Congress in Assam, as the party gears up for the Assembly polls. Borah's departure underscores ongoing leadership frictions within the state unit, potentially complicating the party's strategy and alliance-building efforts.

Sources close to the matter revealed that Borah's grievances had been building over time, with his repeated communications to the high command falling on deaf ears. His tenure as state president, spanning four years, positioned him as a key figure in Assam politics, making his resignation a notable setback.
