Tennessee Senator Bill Hagerty sharply criticized Democrats' opposition to voter ID requirements during a Sunday appearance on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures," linking their stance to the influx of millions of illegal aliens across the U.S. borders under the Biden administration.
Speaking with host Maria Bartiromo, Hagerty argued that Democrats' resistance to basic election security measures aligns with their border policies. "It's no coincidence that the same party that opened our borders to millions of unvetted migrants is the same party fighting against the most basic election security measure imaginable," Hagerty stated.
Hagerty was discussing Republicans' push for the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, legislation that would mandate proof of citizenship for registering to vote in federal elections, as part of President Trump's second-term agenda. He highlighted the bill's broad public support, noting that polls indicate 70-80% of Americans favor it, including a majority of Democrats.
The senator contrasted Democrats' current position with their past concerns about election integrity following Donald Trump's 2016 victory, when they raised alarms but now oppose measures that could limit certain voters from participating.
With Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress, Hagerty emphasized the opportunity to enact the SAVE Act and other reforms to restore faith in American elections, measures that Democrats had previously blocked.
The SAVE Act is positioned as a cornerstone of efforts to implement common-sense election security, addressing vulnerabilities exposed during years of open-border policies under the prior administration.
