Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, 43, has been released on parole from California state prison after serving just 11 months of a five-year sentence, reigniting debates over whether his violent pursuit of an alleged child molester was a justifiable act of parental protection.

Velasquez's legal troubles stemmed from a dramatic February 2022 incident in which he chased Harry Goularte, accused of molesting his then-four-year-old son, over approximately 11 miles (17.7 km) in a high-speed pursuit. During the chase, Velasquez repeatedly fired at the vehicle carrying Goularte and his father, who sustained injuries as a result.

In March 2025, Velasquez entered a no-contest plea to charges related to the shooting, leading to his five-year sentence. At the time of sentencing, he was credited with 1,283 days served, a factor that contributed to his relatively swift parole eligibility.

Confirmation of Velasquez's release came from his longtime agent, Mike Fonseca, who reported the development to media outlets. The news has prompted renewed discussions about the boundaries of self-defense and vigilantism in cases involving child endangerment.

Prior to his full incarceration, Velasquez was granted $1 million (£732,950) bail and placed under house arrest in November 2022, as reported by ESPN. This period allowed him limited freedom amid ongoing legal proceedings.

The case has polarized opinions, with supporters arguing Velasquez's actions were a desperate response to protect his family from Goularte's alleged crimes, while critics highlight the dangers of taking justice into one's own hands, especially given the injuries inflicted on bystanders like Goularte's father.
