The Bayport-Blue Point School District recently held its 16th annual Senior Resident Recognition Dinner alongside an evening of music from local high school students.

Local businesses and organizations helped sponsor the event, with food catered by The Fish Store and Cavanaugh’s, along with salads and desserts prepared by Bayport-Blue Point cafeteria staff.

As more senior citizens move to the area or become more aware of the event, the school district has accommodated even more attendees in recent years.

“It’s really gaining some momentum,” said Suzanne Bonetti, district clerk at Bayport-Blue Point Schools, who organized the dinner and has led preparations for each event over the last four years with the assistance of Brian Johnson, Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education vice president.

“We are grateful for her tireless efforts,” said Melissa Weinstein, administrative assistant to the superintendent of schools at Bayport-Blue Point.

Upon entering the dinner, guests were treated to student artwork in the Bayport-Blue Point High School lobby, along with performances from the Bayport-Blue Point High School chamber orchestra, led by David Johnson; the vocal jazz ensemble, led by Jean Killourhy; and the instrumental jazz ensemble, led by Michael Starling and Paul Weber.

During the dinner, Bayport-Blue Point students volunteered as servers, ensuring that every water pitcher was filled, each empty plate was removed, and that attendees’ needs were accommodated.

Along with the dinner, some attendees, like Marie Martin, got up and danced with student volunteers, creating lasting memories for attendees of all ages.

Numerous district administrators spoke at the event, including Michael Miller, BBP Board of Education president; Timothy Hearney, superintendent of schools, who is retiring this summer; Robert Haas, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction; Keri Loughlin, assistant superintendent for business and finance; and Emily Eckstrum, assistant superintendent for personnel.

Raffles were held, with prizes donated by the school and local groups, including the Board of Education, PTAs, the booster club and SEA-BBS.
