For a fifth consecutive season since the COVID-shortened 2021 campaign, William Floyd’s girls lacrosse program has reached double figures in the win column.
The Colonials, who orchestrated an eight-game winning streak from March 27 through April 24, earned victory No. 10 this spring May 7 with a 16-1 triumph over Suffolk League I rival Copiague. They had 11 different goal scorers that afternoon, led by two apiece from senior Ava Tiederman, junior Rylie Wiegand, freshmen Riley Meyer and Audrianna Smith, and seventh-grader Bailey Meyer.
“I’m very proud of the program as a whole,” coach Nicole Alesi said. “The girls always put in the work and they’re disciplined and focused. Year after year they always do a great job of taking things one game at a time. That’s been our philosophy.”
Floyd will also be seeking a fourth trip to the county semifinals in five years. In 2025, it was knocked off in the quarterfinals by Ward Melville. With two games remaining entering the final week of the regular season, it held a 10-2 league mark and stood firmly in fourth place in power rating points.
“You have to find a way to step it into second gear in the playoffs,” Alesi said.
The Colonials have played more than their share of playoff-type games in the past month, including a pair of 11-10 victories over Sachem North and Commack, a 7-5 win over Connetquot, and a 9-6 defeat to Ward Melville.
“We’ve had a bunch of games that were very tight at the end,” Alesi said. “In the three wins, the girls made some excellent, unselfish plays that led to goals and made the difference. Against Ward Melville, we took some penalties in the second half that cost us.”
Senior Samantha Seaman’s late goal beat Sachem North April 14. It was her fourth of the game and capped a four-goal fourth quarter for the Colonias, who got a hat trick from senior Emma DiMaio and a pair of goals from senior Jayla Pimentel.
Six days later, the defense—led by junior captain Caiden Widecki, sophomores Khloe DiMaio Gianna Trotta, and senior goalie Julia Hipperling (13 saves)—held ground in the final 90 seconds as Floyd held off a late charge by Commack. DiMaio had five goals and Rylie Wiegand added four to lead the offense.
“Commack kept pressing, but we stayed composed in a high-stress situation at the end and held on,” Alesi said. “Julia had an incredible first quarter in goal and we shut them out to set the tone.”
