The Central Bureau of Investigation has formally started its investigation into the alleged NEET 2026 paper leak case and taken over the probe from the Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG) in Jaipur on Tuesday.

According to Rajasthan police SOG sources, nearly two dozen people connected to the case are currently being questioned by the CBI at the Jaipur SOG office. These people were earlier detained by the SOG during preliminary questioning and have now been handed over to the central agency.

Most of those being questioned are students and their family members, sources said.

Initial findings in the investigation reportedly suggest that the alleged paper leak did not originate in Rajasthan. Investigators suspect that the network was spread across multiple states, with the question paper allegedly moving from Nashik to Haryana before reaching Rajasthan.

Sources said the probe has revealed that the case was not limited to the sale of a so-called “guess paper”. Investigators suspect that the accused conspired to sell it as the actual examination paper to students.

Agencies are now probing the role of an organised interstate racket that allegedly tried to circulate the paper through a network of contacts.

So far, investigators have not found the involvement of any coaching institute or coaching operator in the case. However, the CBI is examining all possible angles, including digital evidence, mobile chats, call detail records and financial transactions.

Earlier, police teams from Jaipur, Sikar and Jhunjhunu had joined the SOG in questioning several students and their relatives as part of the investigation. The CBI will now decide, based on the questioning, who may be formally named as accused and who could be taken to Delhi for further investigation.
