In a timely mishap just ahead of Lunar New Year’s Eve celebrations, electricity was restored to Ha Kwai House in Hong Kong’s Kwai Chung Estate after a four-hour blackout plunged around 760 households into darkness on Sunday evening.
The outage began at approximately 9.13pm, when a suspected equipment fault disrupted power supply to the residential high-rise, according to CLP Power, the city’s largest electricity provider. Officials attributed the incident to a water leak that triggered a safety power trip, leaving most of the building without light during a peak holiday period.
Power remained cut off for four hours, with restoration finally achieved at 1.30am on Monday. During this time, the block was shrouded in pitch darkness, save for emergency lighting in the stairwells and parts of the lobby.
CLP staff were quickly dispatched to the scene to investigate. Upon inspection, they confirmed that the power facilities were operating normally, clearing the way for further action.
The building’s own electricians then stepped in to perform emergency repairs, addressing the underlying issue believed to stem from the water leak and equipment fault.
The disruption prompted many residents to evacuate the darkened tower and wait outside, adding to the inconvenience as families prepared for Lunar New Year festivities.
CLP Power emphasized the swift response to minimize impact, ensuring no further outages occurred following the restoration at Ha Kwai House in the Kwai Chung Estate.
