United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing one of the most serious political crises of his leadership after mounting pressure from within the Labour Party following heavy election setbacks across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Although Starmer appeared to survive an immediate leadership threat during a tense cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, calls for his resignation continue to grow. According to reports, at least 80 Labour lawmakers in the Parliament have publicly urged the prime minister to announce a timetable for stepping down to allow a leadership contest to begin.

During the cabinet meeting, Starmer reportedly challenged critics directly, telling ministers, “The country expects us to get on with governing,” while daring opponents to formally move against him if they had enough support.

The pressure intensified as four junior ministers resigned from the government on Tuesday. Miatta Fahnbulleh stepped down just as the cabinet meeting began. She was followed by Jess Phillips, who wrote that Starmer was “a good man fundamentally” but had failed to strongly defend Labour values. Later, Alex Davies-Jones and health minister Zubir Ahmed also resigned.

Markets also reacted nervously to the political uncertainty, with the British pound falling against the dollar and bond yields rising following the developments.
