In a fiery exchange during a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing this week, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) unleashed on Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, accusing him of shielding fraudsters in the Feeding Our Future scandal and declaring that he “ought to be in jail.” Hawley laid bare Ellison's connections to the scheme, where criminals siphoned off $250 million in federal child nutrition funds, some allegedly funneled to terrorists and traffickers as well as the Democrat's campaign coffers.

The confrontation centered on $10,000 in campaign donations that Ellison received from individuals implicated in the Feeding Our Future fraud, as reported by the New York Post last year. Hawley highlighted that the contributions came shortly after a December 11, 2021, meeting at Ellison's office with members of the Somali community, some of whom were later convicted in the scandal.

Hawley directly challenged Ellison on the donations, reading from a transcript of the meeting where discussions of money occurred repeatedly. An audio recording of the session captured the attendees asking Ellison for assistance in securing funding, followed by talk of campaign contributions.

Ellison repeatedly denied the accusations, labeling Hawley's claims as false statements. Despite the pushback, Hawley pressed forward, spotlighting the timeline linking the meeting to the incoming donations.

The Missouri Republican further alleged that Ellison personally intervened by calling to block investigations into the fraud. In the hearing, Hawley confronted Ellison with pointed questions, including, “Are you…,” underscoring the attorney general's meetings and financial ties to the Somali fraudsters involved.

The Feeding Our Future scandal has drawn widespread scrutiny for the massive theft of federal funds intended for child nutrition programs. Hawley's pointed remarks during the official hearing amplified calls for accountability, framing Ellison's actions as protective of those who exploited the system.
