As the Narendra Modi-led NDA government prepares to complete two years of its third term in June, buzz around a possible Union Cabinet reshuffle is growing louder within both the government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to Times Now sources, discussions around a broader political and organisational overhaul have intensified, with the BJP also expected to announce a new national team in the coming weeks.
At present, the Council of Ministers comprises 72 members, including the Prime Minister. Under constitutional provisions, the strength of the Council of Ministers can go up to 15 per cent of the total Lok Sabha strength, meaning the Union government can accommodate up to 81 ministers. The current numbers have further fuelled speculation that vacancies could be filled during the expected reshuffle exercise.
The anticipated rejig is likely to balance governance priorities, organisational strategy and electoral calculations ahead of crucial state elections scheduled in 2027.
Times Now sources indicate that some sitting Union ministers could be moved into key organisational responsibilities under the new BJP team, expected to be led by Nitin Nabin. In parallel, senior leaders currently working within the party organisation are likely to be inducted into the Union Cabinet as part of the reshuffle exercise.
The possible restructuring is being viewed as both a governance reset and a political calibration exercise as the BJP enters the second half of Modi 3.0. Party insiders suggest the leadership is keen on strengthening coordination between the government and organisation while also rewarding leaders who have played significant roles in expanding the BJP’s electoral footprint across states.
Representation from states heading to Assembly elections in 2027 is also expected to play a crucial role in the reshuffle calculus. According to Times Now sources, the BJP leadership is closely evaluating regional representation and caste equations to ensure stronger political messaging in poll-bound states.
Speculation over ministerial changes has already triggered intense discussions within party circles, with several names doing the rounds for possible inclusion, elevation or reassignment. However, there has been no official confirmation from either the Prime Minister’s Office or the BJP leadership so far.
The expected cabinet rejig would be the first major restructuring exercise since the formation of the Modi 3.0 government in 2024. The move could set the tone for the BJP’s strategy heading into a packed electoral cycle over the next two years.
