Long Island’s 2026 History Hunt will be doubling the number of locations and will be offering a cash prize of $1,776 for the people who visit and document their time at all 26-locations from Brooklyn to Montauk.
To kick off the celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced the start of the hunt on Tuesday, May 12, outside Raynham Hall in the Town of Oyster Bay.
The hunt will last from May 23 until Sept. 30 and extends the length of geographic Long Island, including sites in Brooklyn and Queens. Long Island residents and families are encouraged to go toLIhistoryhunt.comand upload their selfies in front of or in the historic spots that include taverns, historic homes, monuments and museums.
Anyone who takes part in the challenge will be automatically eligible to win a prize and anyone who visits all 26 locations will be entered in to win the $1,776 cash prize.
Some of the sites include Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery on 25th street, the Rock Hall Museum in Lawrence, as well as the Mattituck Laurel Historical Society and Museums, Sag Harbor’s Historical Museum and Planting Fields in Oyster Bay.
“It will be a fantastic event, teaching children and historians of all ages about the very in-depth and rich history of our town and our region,” Saladino said.
Theresa Skvarla, deputy director of the Raynham Hall Museum, and Justinne Lake-Jedzinak, director of education and public programs, said the history hunt is ideal for families and residents of all ages.
The museum offers 90-minute guided tours, scavenger hunts for kids and an augmented reality tour for visitors of the museum through their phones.
The cost for admission to the Raynham Hall Museum is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and free for children 5 and under.
