Colombian Congresswoman Ángela María Vergara has issued a desperate public plea after her son, Rafael Alfonso Vergara, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and allegedly subjected to harsh treatment in custody, spotlighting the intense tactics of American immigration authorities.
Vergara, a prominent member of Colombia's House of Representatives, took to social media to denounce the "inhumane conditions" her son endured, claiming he was "imprisoned and chained" like a dangerous criminal despite possessing legal documentation. The incident has drawn attention amid escalating tensions in the U.S. political landscape, where federal agencies face a funding crisis that underscores the human toll of enforcement strategies.
Rafael Alfonso Vergara was reportedly held for over 18 days in a facility in Louisiana. His mother described the detention as a sudden "snatch" operation by ICE agents, even though he had entered the United States legally with a valid work permit and a Social Security number.
At the time of his arrest, Vergara's son was awaiting an asylum hearing scheduled for 2028, positioning him as an individual pursuing legal resolution within the American immigration system. Congresswoman Vergara emphasized that such treatment violates basic human rights, particularly for someone in his circumstances.
In her emotional testimony, Vergara highlighted her son's unspecified health conditions as an additional reason for his immediate release. She has directly appealed to the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and President Gustavo Petro to intervene on his behalf.
ICE has yet to release a statement regarding the detention, according to Times Now reports. The congresswoman's outcry arrives at a critical juncture, amplifying concerns over the aggressive enforcement practices amid broader debates on immigration policy.
