President Donald Trump sharply rejected Iran’s latest proposal in the ongoing nuclear and ceasefire negotiations, dismissing it as a “piece of garbage” and saying he didn’t even bother to finish reading the document. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump expressed deep frustration with Tehran’s position and warned that the fragile ceasefire between the two sides is “on massive life support.”
“I got their offer, looked at the first couple of pages, and it was the same old garbage,” Trump said. “I didn’t even finish reading it. It’s not serious. They’re not ready to make a real deal.”
The president’s blunt remarks come as diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation in the Middle East appear to be faltering. Although a ceasefire was announced several weeks ago, sporadic incidents and accusations from both sides have kept tensions high. Trump warned that without significant movement from Iran, the ceasefire could collapse completely.
“The ceasefire is on massive life support right now,” he said. “If they don’t get serious very quickly, it’s not going to be around much longer.”
US officials have said Iran’s latest proposal failed to address key American demands, including limits on its nuclear program, reduced support for regional proxy groups like Hezbollah, and guarantees regarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The harsh rejection marks another low point in the already difficult negotiations. While European mediators and some Gulf states have been trying to keep both sides at the table, Trump’s comments suggest Washington has little patience left for what it views as stalling tactics by Tehran.
Iranian officials have not yet publicly responded to Trump’s latest statement. The president is scheduled to travel to Beijing this week for a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, where the Iran situation is expected to be a major topic of discussion. China, a close economic partner of Iran, has been urging both sides to reach a diplomatic solution.
The latest Iranian proposal came just days after indirect talks mediated by European diplomats in Oman. Those discussions had raised cautious hopes for a breakthrough, but US officials quickly described Iran’s counter-offer as insufficient, particularly on limits to uranium enrichment and regional proxy activities. The proposal followed weeks of escalating rhetoric after US strikes on Iranian targets in late April, which Iran called a “declaration of war.”
This rejection marks the third time in the past month that Trump has publicly dismissed Iranian overtures. Earlier this month, he walked away from a proposed framework deal in Geneva, calling it “weak and one-sided,” while Iran accused Washington of negotiating in bad faith under the cover of military pressure. Trump warned that without significant movement from Iran, the ceasefire could collapse completely.
“The ceasefire is on massive life support right now,” he said. “If they don’t get serious very quickly, it’s not going to be around much longer.”
