Mumbai Indians (MI) hit an unprecedented low after their two-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday (May 10) at the Shaheed Veer International Stadium in Raipur. The defeat confirmed that MI are out of the playoff race with no chance of them making the second round of the tournament mathematically

MI are currently 9th in the table with just 6 points after a disastrous season in which they have won just three matches in 11 outings. The five-time champions started the season with a victory in the season opener against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in what marked the first instance of them starting the season with a win since 2012. However, their campaign has derailed since then with a run of three defeats in a row twice in a row in between wins against Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

The result means that MI has now gone six seasons without lifting a title, which is the longest period the franchise has not lifted the IPL trophy in. Previously, the biggest drought without being crowned IPL champions for the franchise was of five seasons when they did not win the title in the first five seasons before their maiden victory in the 2013 edition.

Between 2013 and 2020, the Mumbai-based team were crowned champions five times under Rohit Sharma's captaincy and never went more than one season without lifting the elusive trophy. This included back-to-back title wins in 2019 and 2020. The latter remains the last time they won the tournament.

In fact, in these six years, MI has not even played the final even once. Before 2020, the franchise had never gone more than two years without being part of the summit clash.

Mumbai Indians In Each IPL Season

The only positive for the franchise is that despite the wretched period and the worst phase in their history, they have managed to maintain their record and never gone more than two seasons (2008-09, 2021-22) without reaching the playoffs.

MI needs to win one match in the remaining three games to avoid their worst-ever season as far as wins are concerned. Both in 2022 and 2024, they secured four victories. Currently, they have won three games in the ongoing campaign.

I have three tough games remaining with fixtures against Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals, who are all in the playoff race.
