Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon on Topping Drive in Riverhead, according to a Suffolk County Police Department news release.
Police said Southampton Town Police officers responded to a call of an “escalating violent domestic situation” at about 2:40 p.m. and encountered a man who was armed with a knife. The man was shot by officers and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A woman was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, police said. Three Southampton Town Police officers were treated and released at a local hospital.
Detectives from the New York State Attorney General’s Office also responded, police said. The investigation is continuing.
