The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has made a major breakthrough in the murder case ofSuvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath, arresting three individuals in connection with the killing. The arrests were carried out on Sunday (May 10) in Uttar Pradesh after an intensive inter-state operation involving coordinated action by Kolkata Police and UP Police. The three men identified as Vishal Srivastava, Raj Singh, and Mayank Mishra have been arrested in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The accused were apprehended by the CID and STF teams, which jointly formed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder.
The breakthrough in the case came after police traced a UPI transaction made by the assailants at a toll booth in Bally near Kolkata, which helped investigators close in on the suspects. “This is a breakthrough. The investigation indicated that the assailants were from outside West Bengal. Based on technical surveillance, digital tracking and other inputs, members of the SIT were sent to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar,” the officer toldPTI.
Chandranath Rath was returning home when he was shot dead at point-blank range on Wednesday night between 10 pm and 10:10 pm. At the time of the attack, Rath was seated in the front passenger seat of his Mahindra Scorpio SUV and was barely 200 metres away from his residence in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas.
The CID intensified its search after receiving intelligence inputs about his movements. A joint operation was launched, leading to his arrest along with two other suspects linked to the case.
Authorities are also probing the possible motive behind the killing of Rath, who served as Adhikari’s personal assistant. Investigators are examining whether the murder was politically motivated or linked to personal disputes.
The CID has indicated that further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses, with more suspects believed to be under scrutiny in connection with the case.
