Tamil Nadu's political landscape is set for a generational shift, with the Assembly poised to witness a high-profile face-off between Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin - two leaders who transitioned from cinema to politics and now represent rival power centres in the state.
The DMK on Wednesday formally elected Udhayanidhi Stalin as the leader of its Legislature Party, making him the Leader of the Opposition in the new Assembly. The decision was taken at a meeting of DMK MLAs at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, according to a party statement.
The development sets the stage for an intense political rivalry between Vijay and Udhayanidhi, both seen as faces of a younger political generation that is reshaping the image and style of Tamil Nadu politics.
Unlike the traditional white dhoti-and-shirt attire long associated with Dravidian politics, Udhayanidhi is known for his casual appearance - usually jeans and a white T-shirt carrying the DMK youth wing logo. In many ways, that modern image mirrors Vijay, who broke convention by appearing in a blazer and trousers during his swearing-in ceremony as Chief Minister.
Udhayanidhi now steps into a role once held by his father, MK Stalin, who will not be part of the Assembly after losing the Kolathur constituency. The transition is reminiscent of the 2016-2021 period when Stalin led the Opposition while DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi remained away from active Assembly proceedings due to age-related health concerns.
Having risen rapidly within the DMK after taking charge of the party's youth wing, Udhayanidhi emerged as a central figure in the government after the DMK returned to power in 2021. He first became a minister and later Deputy Chief Minister, consolidating his position as the party's key leader after Stalin.
Re-elected from the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency for a second consecutive term, Udhayanidhi now faces perhaps his toughest political challenge yet - leading the DMK in the Assembly against a newly empowered government headed by Vijay.
Senior DMK leader KN Nehru has been appointed deputy leader of the DMK Legislature Party, while former minister EV Velu will serve as the party whip.
