California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed a bill on Wednesday allocating $90 million in taxpayer funds to Planned Parenthood, described as the latest financial support from the state to the organization.
A release from Newsom’s office characterized the allocation as “one-time emergency funds for Planned Parenthood and other clinics providing reproductive health care services.” The funding comes in response to what the release portrays as an urgent situation triggered by President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” derisively referred to as the “Big Ugly Bill,” which defunded Planned Parenthood for one year.
“California is taking steps to ensure people don’t lose access to the range of services provided by Planned Parenthood,” Newsom said in a statement accompanying the bill's signing.
The legislation specifically aims to offset federal funding cuts imposed by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with the $90 million infusion directed toward Planned Parenthood clinics across the Golden State.
This move marks another significant infusion of state resources to Planned Parenthood, continuing a pattern of financial support from California to the reproductive health provider amid shifts in federal policy.
Governor Newsom’s action underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining access to services at Planned Parenthood and similar clinics in the face of the one-year federal defunding measure enacted through President Trump’s bill.
