Russia Seized A Dozen Ukrainian Villages In February: 'Expanding Security Zone'

In a significant battlefield update, the Kremlin announced on Sunday that Russian forces have seized a dozen eastern Ukrainian villages during the first two weeks of February, as declared by army chief Valery Gerasimov. Speaking while visiting troops operating inside Ukraine, Gerasimov highlighted the advances made under harsh winter conditions, underscoring Moscow's ongoing military momentum in the region.

"In two weeks of February, despite severe winter conditions, combined forces and military units of the joint task force liberated 12 settlements," Gerasimov stated, according to reports from AFP. The general's comments came amid continued operations in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces are pushing forward despite logistical challenges posed by the cold weather.

Gerasimov specified that Moscow's troops are advancing toward Sloviansk, the industrial city that has been a focal point of conflict between pro-Kiev and pro-Moscow forces since 2014. He noted that Russian positions are now approximately 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the city, marking a notable reduction in the distance to this strategic target.

Beyond the eastern front, Gerasimov emphasized efforts to expand a security zone along border areas in the northeastern Sumy and Kharkiv regions. These areas currently represent limited footholds for Moscow, but the general indicated that Russian operations are broadening to secure these vulnerable border zones.

Looking ahead, Gerasimov revealed plans to confer with senior officers on "further actions in the Dnipropetrovsk direction." This statement signals potential expansion of military operations beyond the territories currently claimed by Russian forces, hinting at broader strategic ambitions in the conflict.
