In a heart-wrenching yet heroic act of generosity, 10-month-old Alin Sherin Abraham from Kerala became the state's youngest organ donor, saving the lives of five people after being declared brain-dead following a tragic road accident. On Sunday, the Kerala Police paid a solemn Guard of Honour to the infant, honoring her extraordinary contribution that breathed new life into desperately ill patients.
The nightmare began on February 5 at the Pallam Borma junction in Pathanamthitta district, when a car approaching from the opposite direction collided head-on with the vehicle carrying Alin and her family. The infant suffered serious injuries, while her mother and grandparents were left critically hurt in the devastating crash.
Alin was rushed first to hospitals in Changanassery and Tiruvalla for immediate care before being airlifted to Kochi for advanced treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical teams, doctors declared her brain-dead on February 13, confirming that her brain had irreversibly ceased functioning, even as life-support machines maintained her heartbeat.
In an agonizing decision, Alin's parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, chose to donate their daughter's organs, ensuring her legacy would live on through others. "We wanted other children to live," the grieving couple conveyed through the organ donation coordinators, turning profound loss into a gift of life.
Alin's liver was transplanted into a six-month-old baby undergoing treatment, marking the youngest posthumous liver transplant in Kerala. Her two kidneys went to another child in need, while her heart valve and corneas were allocated to additional patients, collectively benefiting five recipients across the state.
The complex organ donation process was seamlessly coordinated by the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS), with crucial support from the Home Department. The organs were swiftly transported from the Kochi hospital to various medical centres in Thiruvananthapuram, maximizing the chances of successful transplants.
