Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy shared a light-hearted yet politically loaded moment during an event in Hyderabad on Sunday, leaving the audience laughing and sparking chatter online. What began as a formal discussion on Telangana’s economic ambitions soon turned into a witty exchange after Revanth Reddy appealed to the Centre for stronger financial backing to help the state achieve its long-term development goals. PM Modi, while insisting he would avoid politics, responded with a humorous “offer” involving Gujarat and subtly suggested that the Telangana Chief Minister “connect” with him politically if he truly wanted to achieve those targets.
Speaking at the event, Revanth Reddy said Telangana was aiming to become a trillion-dollar economy over the next decade and sought greater support from the Union government to accelerate the state’s growth trajectory.
Referring to the support extended by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to united Andhra Pradesh, the Telangana Chief Minister urged PM Modi to similarly back Telangana’s development push.
Responding to the request, the Prime Minister began by recalling that Revanth Reddy had earlier suggested politics should not be discussed at the event.
“Revanth ji had said we should not talk politics, so I also will not,” PM Modi said, before pausing briefly and drawing laughter from the crowd.
The Prime Minister then delivered the remark that instantly became the highlight of the event. “I would tell Revanth ji that I am ready to give Telangana the same amount that the Central government gave Gujarat during its 10 years of rule. But the moment I do that, Telangana’s current share will be cut by half,” Modi joked.
He further added, “You will not be able to reach where you want to reach. So it is better that you connect with me,” in an apparent tongue-in-cheek suggestion for the Congress leader to align with the BJP-led Centre.
The audience erupted in laughter and applause following the exchange, while videos of the moment quickly spread across social media platforms.
Though delivered humorously, PM Modi’s comments carried clear political undertones, especially amid the continuing tussle between the Congress government in Telangana and the BJP-led Centre over funding allocations, infrastructure projects and development credit.
Interestingly, throughout the exchange, PM Modi repeatedly stressed that he was speaking in a “non-political” manner, even as his remarks drew attention precisely because of their political implications.
