Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulatedC. Joseph Vijayafter the TVK founder formally took oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a major political transition in the state. According to official information, Modi and Vijay spoke over the telephone shortly after the swearing-in ceremony in Chennai.
The Prime Minister conveyed his wishes to thenewly elected Chief Ministerand indicated that the Centre would continue cooperating with the Tamil Nadu government on governance and development matters.
“Congratulations to Thiru C. Joseph Vijay on taking oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Best wishes for his tenure ahead,” Modi wrote in a post on X.
“The Central Government will keep working with the Tamil Nadu Government to improve the lives of people,” he added.
The conversation came just hours after Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was sworn in at a high-profile ceremony attended by political leaders, film personalities and senior officials in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay and members of his cabinet.
Vijay’s elevation to the Chief Minister’s post marks one of the biggest political shifts in Tamil Nadu in decades. The actor-turned-politician led TVK to a stunning electoral debut, disrupting the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state’s political landscape. His campaign combined welfare messaging, anti-establishment rhetoric and strong youth mobilisation, particularly across urban and semi-urban constituencies.
The scale of TVK’s performance has already triggered wider national political interest because Tamil Nadu has historically remained resistant to the BJP’s electoral expansion. Against that backdrop, Modi’s outreach to Vijay was closely watched in political circles for signs of how New Delhi may engage with the new state government.
While there was no immediate indication of any formal political alignment, the Prime Minister’s message emphasised administrative cooperation rather than ideological positioning.
The relationship between the Union government and Tamil Nadu has often witnessed friction over language policy, federal funding, NEET and governance issues under previous administrations. That context gives Sunday’s exchange additional significance.
Political observers say both sides are likely to approach the early phase cautiously, particularly as Vijay begins shaping his administration and defining TVK’s policy direction beyond campaign messaging.
