Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have created history during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday (May 10) at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur. The two players equalled an all-time record of MS Dhoni after being named in the playing XI of both teams.
The record was confirmed after the toss, which RCB won and chose to bowl first. Both Rajat Patidar and Suryakumar confirmed that both teams are unchanged for the marquee fixture.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Create History
This marks the 278th game of both Rohit's and Virat's IPL careers. This makes them the joint-most capped players in the league's history. The two former Indian captains have equaled the record of another former Indian captain, MS Dhoni.
Most IPL Matches Played By A Player
He holds the records for the most matches played by a player for one team in the league's history. Dhoni (248 matches for CSK) is second on the list. The 44-year-old also played 30 games for the Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 and 2017.
Meanwhile, Rohit is third on the list after playing 232 games for the Mumbai-based team, who he joined in 2011. The six-time IPL winner started his career with the Deccan Chargers and played 46 games for them between 2009 and 2010.
With RCB more likely to make the playoffs, Kohli is likely to hold the record at the end of the season. However, if they fail to qualify, they will likely share the record (unless one of them misses a match), as both teams have the same number of games left after today's game.
It is worth noting that while Dhoni has not played a single game in the 2026 IPL, he is still part of the CSK squad. If he plays the remaining games, he will remain equal with Rohit and Virat. In case the Men in Yellow reach the playoffs and both the Super Kings and Indians do not, he will again hold the record outright.
For those unversed, Dhoni has been suffering from a calf injury and hence has been out of action. There is no clarity on his return date.
