A dense fog advisory is in effect for Suffolk and Nassau counties through 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
Visibility may drop to a quarter-mile or less at times, the weather service said. The advisory also includes southern Queens and Kings (Brooklyn).
Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous, especially during the early morning hours. The weather service advises motorists to slow down, use headlights and leave plenty of distance between vehicles.
Forecasters said confidence was higher for fog development overnight into early Sunday morning after rain moved out, with the potential for locally dense fog across Long Island.
Conditions are expected to improve later Sunday morning. The Riverhead area forecast calls for fog before 11 a.m., then partly sunny skies with a high near 75 and light south winds.
Showers are possible later Sunday and again Sunday night into Monday, with the local forecast calling for a chance of rain after 8 p.m. Sunday and a chance of showers Monday, according to the weather service.
