Actor-politicianC. Joseph Vijaywas sworn in as the Chief Minister ofTamil Naduon Sunday, marking a historic political shift in the state, which saw an end to nearly six decades of alternating rule by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay at a grand ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. Nine ministers were also sworn in alongside him as part of the new council of ministers.
In his first speech as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay said that a "real era" of secular and social justice had dawned now.
"This is a new beginning. A new era of real, secular, social justice starts now," said Vijay.
Addressing party cadre and supporters, he thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for giving him this huge responsibility and requested they give him time to deliver on his promises.
“I will never make a mistake," he remarked.
The actor-turned-politician also spoke about the challenges and humiliation he faced during his political journey, thanking his cadre for facing them on his behalf. He also promised a transparent government.
"When crores of people stand with me, I have the confidence and belief in my heart that together we can face anything, no matter what comes our way. Today, the condition in which our Tamil Nadu government has been left is something I have seen for myself. The last government has gone out after borrowing debts of more than Rs 10 lakh crore. The treasury had been completely emptied before they left office. It is in such a situation that we have taken charge," he said.
“We’ll have a transparent government. I will take it forward from there. As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, I won’t hide things or shy away from you," Vijay added.
Vijay assumes office after the TVK-led alliance secured the support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 118 required to form the government.
