In a heartfelt op-ed, the ranking member of the Nassau County Legislature’s Veterans and Senior Affairs committee calls for renewed dedication to supporting the region's veterans, highlighting their enduring service and the critical programs aimed at meeting their needs.
The legislator, a longtime Freeport resident, oversees the vital services and programs provided to those who have sacrificed much for the community. Noting that veterans' commitment to service often extends into their civilian lives, the op-ed emphasizes the importance of recognizing and honoring this ongoing dedication.
A recent personal experience underscored this sentiment during a family funeral at Calverton National Cemetery. The procession was greeted by scores of volunteers who escorted the family to the gravesite, while veterans lined the roadway, saluting the passing cars in a display of dignity and reverence.
"It was deeply touching to see how freely these patriots continue to give back to the greater community after they’ve concluded their service in our nation’s armed forces," the legislator writes. "Not only do we owe each of them a debt of gratitude, we have a responsibility to implement policies and create programs that ensure their needs are met throughout the year."
Freeport has been a key host for Nassau County Veterans Stand Down events, with the most recent last Thanksgiving serving more than 600 veterans. Participants received winter essentials, food, and comprehensive support including employment assistance, education, housing, and PTSD resources.
In Island Park, a transformative project is underway at the site of a former motel, converting it into a supportive housing community for veterans. Funded by a $20 million investment from the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, the initiative will provide at least 50 permanent homes for former service members. The legislator proudly voted in favor of the project as a member of the Nassau County Legislature.
The op-ed concludes with hope that the Island Park development will serve as a model for the county, urging a redoubled commitment to addressing veterans' needs through robust policies and programs.
