Steven Sternberger of Riverhead died May 7, 2026, in Riverhead. He was 84 years old.
Born in Croatia on Oct. 30, 1941, he was the son of Bartol Ljubicic and Julia Sternberger.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966.
He married Antoinette (“Annette”) Spicijaric April 29, 1967, in the Bronx. He worked as a jeweler in New York City.
He was one of the founders of Special Soccer on Long Island. He enjoyed sports, including baseball, (a Mets fan) and soccer. He enjoyed playing cards and loved to dance.
He is survived by his wife, his children, Michael (Angelique), Erik (Candi) and Julia; and by four grandchildren, Hailey, Zachary, Jacquelyn and Daniel.
The family will receive visitors Tuesday, May 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass will be held Wednesday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
