Will actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay finally take oath as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister today? The suspense continues as the state waits for official clarity amid the ongoing political manoeuvring. Despite the TVK emerging as the single largest party, uncertainty over government formation and alliances has kept the swearing-in timeline unclear, keeping both supporters and observers on edge.

In the recently concluded Tamil Nadu assembly elections, TVK won 108 out of 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, becoming the single-largest party. Congress, with 5 seats, has decided to extend its full support to the TVK to form the government.

For a brief moment on Friday, it appeared almost certain that Vijay would take oath as Chief Minister. It was reported that C. Joseph Vijay will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu tomorrow, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM. The event was reported to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium.

The development comes after Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan, where he formally staked claim to form the government after consolidating support from multiple parties following the fractured mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

However, a late twist involving the VCK brought the momentum to a halt, reviving uncertainty. As per developments late last night, the CPI and CPM have extended letters of support to the TVK, while the VCK is expected to take a final call today. The IUML, which was initially reported to have backed the TVK, later clarified that it has not formally declared its support, adding to the suspense over the numbers game.

Sources told Times Now that the TVK could garner the backing of only 116 MLAs, including five from the Congress. On Friday evening, Vijay met Governor Arlekar for the third time in 48 hours and staked a claim to form the government in the state. He reportedly claimed the support of 120 MLAs, including two each from the VCK and the IUML. However, as per the sources, Vijay submitted only hard copies of the support of 116 MLAs.

Moreover, another contender for the CM post surfaced in Tamil Nadu as AMMK, with 1 seat, extended its support to AIADMK, which has 47 seats to form a government. In a letter, AMMK urged the Governor to invite AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami to form the government.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is all set to arrive in the state attend the swearing-in ceremony of TVK chief Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, according to reports.
