Chennai:In a latest twist to Tamil Nadu’s post-election political landscape, actor-turned-politician Vijay appears to be inching closer to government formation as several opposition parties rally behind theTamilaga Vettri Kazhagam(TVK). With the TVK emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats, just 10 short of the majority mark, support from the CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and the Congress could significantly reshape the state’s political equations.
Sources now claimed that the CPI, the CPI(M), and the VCK are likely to extend support to "Thalapathy" Vijay's TVK. The Congress reportedly played a key role in adding numbers for the TVK. Earlier in the day, reports surfaced that the Congress president, Mallikarjun Kharge, had a word with the VCK chief regarding extending support to the TVK. A day after the result was declared, the Congress, which contested the assembly polls in alliance with the DMK, decided to back the TVK with its five MLAs.
The sources said that the Left parties and VCK have had a "change in mind", after reports of DMK and AIADMK mulling an alliance together to keep Vijay out of power. As per sources, all three parties are expecting cabinet berths in a possible TVK-led government.Tamil Nadu Government Formation 2026 Live:
Can Vijay Form Government In Tamil Nadu?
The TVK bagged 108 seats in the polls. However, Vijay has to vacate one of the seats he contested, reducing its number to 107. With the support of five Congress MAs, the effective strength increased to 112, still six short of the majority mark. The TVK then contacted the CPI, CPIM, and the VCK for support. All these parties have two seats each.
If these three DMK allies formally offer support to Vijay's party, it can achieve a majority mark of 118 seats.
The DMK has decided to break ties with the Congress after it supported the TVK in the government formation. On Friday, DMK MP Kanimozhi wrote a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, requesting a change of seating arrangement in the Lok Sabha after the Congress backed the TVK in Tamil Nadu.
Kanimozhi's Letter To LS Speaker
"I write to respectfully request suitable changes in the seating arrangement of the MP belonging to the DMK in the Lok Sabha. In view of the changed political circumstances and as our alliance with the Indian National Congress has come to an end, it may not be appropriate for our Members to continue occupying the present seating arrangement alongside them in the House..."
