India has had a sea change in their captaincy in all formats in recent times, after Rohit Sharma retired from Tests and T20Is. Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as the captain of the T20I side, while Shubman Gill was given the reins of the ODI and Test side. Now, there have been reports that have emerged which claim that Suryakumar Yadav might be removed from his post, and the reins could be handed over to Shreyas Iyer. It now looks like Gill too is about to follow suit.

According to a report by NDTV, the Indian team management is looking at one person to lead both the T20I and ODI sides. Hence, it will be Shreyas Iyer who could lead the team in ODIs as well, replacing Shubman Gill. This means that Iyer will be the leading contender to captain India in the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

"Expect some changes when the new T20 team is announced. We are looking at one player helming both the T20 and ODI sides. Our focus is on both now. The BCCI wants to look at young talent while also giving opportunities to experienced players. Shreyas has done exceedingly well in the last few years; his injuries have been unfortunate," a source close to the proceedings told NDTV

"This year, he has led his IPL franchise with a lot of courage and dedication. Yes, he is the top contender for white-ball captaincy.Suryakumar Yadavhas been our World Cup-winning captain, and his contributions will be rewarded as well," the source added.

According to a report by The Times of India, Suryakumar Yadav is all set to be replaced as the captain of the Indian T20I side from the next T20I cycle immediately following IPL 2026, as the team management have run out of patience with his lean patch of form. Shreyas Iyer is the likely candidate to replace him as the new leader of the Indian team in the shortest format of the game. This will mean, that Iyer is set to return to the T20I playing XI for the first time in over 2 years.

Shreyas Iyer will thus be appointed the captain for the two-match T20I series against Ireland, which will be Team India's first assignment since the T20 World Cup 2026 win. This will be followed by a five-match T20I series in England.
