MILAN — South Korean short track speed skater Hwang Dae-heon claimed a silver medal in the men's 1,500-meter event at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on Saturday, adding to his collection of Olympic hardware despite arriving in Italy less than fully fit. The three-time Olympian celebrated his achievement at the Milano Ice Skating Arena, finishing just behind gold medalist Jens van 't Wout of the Netherlands in a race that marked Hwang's second straight podium finish in the distance.
Hwang, who first tasted Olympic success as a teenager with a medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, now boasts four Olympic medals in total. His latest silver follows the gold he secured in the same event four years ago at the Beijing Olympics, underscoring his consistency in one of short track speed skating's marquee disciplines.
"I actually love accessories, and it would have been nice to have won a gold medal here," Hwang said with a smile after the victory ceremony at Milano Ice Skating Arena. "This silver medal is still very precious to me. I am proud of standing where I am today after all that I've gone through. I want to also thank my teammates for trusting me and helping me get here."
Hwang's path to this medal has been anything but straightforward. After his breakout performance in 2018, he became embroiled in a legal battle with former national team member Lim Hyo-jun, a controversy that drew significant attention within South Korea's short track community.
His reputation among fans took further hits due to frequent fouls during international competitions, culminating in an incident where he injured teammate Park Ji-won. These setbacks painted Hwang as a villain in the eyes of some supporters, testing his resilience both on and off the ice.
Compounding these challenges was a knee injury sustained in November last year, which threatened to sideline him ahead of the Milan-Cortina Games. Hwang arrived in Milan this month not at 100 percent capacity but reported steady improvement leading into the 1,500-meter final on Feb. 14.
Despite the hurdles, Hwang's silver medal serves as a testament to his perseverance, transforming personal adversity into another piece of coveted "bling" in his growing collection of Olympic accolades.
