In a thrilling finale at the Milano Ice Skating Arena in Milan, South Korea secured its fifth medal of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on Saturday as Hwang Dae-heon claimed silver in the men's 1,500-meter short track speed skating event.

Hwang crossed the finish line in second place behind Jens van 't Wout of the Netherlands in the 13 1/2-lap race, marking his fourth career Olympic medal and his second consecutive in the 1,500 meters following his gold at Beijing 2022.

The final featured nine skaters in a chaotic battle that saw multiple athletes wiped out, but Hwang navigated the fray unscathed, becoming the first South Korean male short tracker to win a medal at three consecutive Winter Games.

With this achievement on February 14, South Korea's medal tally now stands at one gold, two silvers, and two bronzes so far in northern Italy.

Earlier in the day, the South Korean women's 3,000-meter relay team advanced to the final scheduled for Wednesday, keeping the nation's short track hopes alive.
