The Congress has taken a swipe at former ally the DMK and its arch rival, the AIADMK, after reports of the two parties coming together in an alliance amidst growing uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu. Congress's Manickam Tagore tweeted: "Two Dravidian parties. Lifetime enemies. They became one overnight. Not for Tamil Nadu. Not for secularism. Vijay to stop one man. Congress clearly saw that and left. You cannot call yourself secular by sleeping with the RSS/BJP B-team. 'Stable government' is the political language of two scared parties to protect their power. Congress has rightly left. Will DMK take off its mask today? Who is a traitor?"
Tagore's tweet comes amidst reports of DMK and AIADMK considering an alliance as Vijay's TVK scrambles to get the numbers to prove majority. Vijay's TVK won a landslide victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 108 seats, which is 10 seats short of majority. The Congress, with its five seats, has extended its support officially to the TVK, taking the party's Assembly tally up to 113. It still remains to be seen if the smaller parties like the Left and the VCK will support the TVK.
Earlier, CPM state secretary TT Shanmugam said that the TVK should be invited to form the government. "According to the Constitution, it is TVK that should be allowed to form the government. We have never seen a situation like this in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, and now we have a hung Assembly. It is the Governor who should invite Vijay to form the government because he is leading. So, the Governor is now saying that there is a High Court order, which is not right. We have a general body meeting of the party tomorrow, and following that, we will decide within two days on our stance on whether we are going to support Vijay or not. We met Stalin, considering the relationship we share, and spoke to him about the current election scenario. We also told him that the Governor should call only TVK and let Vijay take the oath as chief minister."
In a separate development, all 108 MLAs of TVK have threatened to resign if the DMK and AIADMK attempt to stake claim to form the government in the state. As per sources, the TVK's decision comes amid the DMK authorising MK Stalin to take emergency decisions amid a lack of majority for the TVK. Vijay's party suspects that the AIADMK and DMK are working together to stop its bid for government formation.
