Donald Trump has a way of putting things. During a conversation with ABC News, asked about the latest exchange of fire between US forces and Iran near the Strait of Hormuz, the president called it a "love tap" and insisted the ceasefire was still holding. The situation on the water told a more complicated story.

The US did not simply absorb the attack and move on. US Central Command said American forces struck back at the Iranian military sites that launched the attacks, targeting missile and drone launch locations, command and control facilities and surveillance infrastructure. Explosions were reported near the strait. Centcom confirmed no US assets were hit.

He also delivered a direct warning. If Iran does not get a deal signed "FAST," Trump said, the US would respond "a lot harder, and a lot more violently" in future confrontations. He added that Iran was led by "LUNATICS" and that the country would never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Speaking separately to ABC News, Trump said “the ceasefire is going. It’s in effect".
