Iran has accused the United States of violating the ceasefire after a series of reported strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, including attacks on Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, and a naval checkpoint in Minab. According to Iran’s IRIB broadcaster, a spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the US targeted an Iranian oil tanker moving from Iranian coastal waters near Jask toward the Strait of Hormuz, as well as another vessel entering the strait opposite the UAE port of Fujairah.
In a statement carried by IRIB, the spokesperson said the US also “carried out airstrikes on civilian areas in cooperation with some countries in the region on the coasts of Khamir, Sirik and Qeshm Island.” The spokesperson added that Iran’s military “immediately and in retaliation attacked American military vessels east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of Chabahar port, causing significant damage to them.”
Iran further warned that it “will give a crushing response to any aggression… without the slightest hesitation.” The accusations came after explosions were reported Thursday in and around Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, and Sirik in Hormozgan province, a strategically important coastal region bordering the Strait of Hormuz.
IRGC-linked outlet Mehr reported blasts on Qeshm Island, while Iran’s Fars News Agency said residents in Bandar Abbas heard multiple sounds resembling explosions near the southern port city. Iranian-linked reports described the incidents as possible “clashes in the water.”
Iranian state media later reported that parts of the Bahman Qeshm pier, a commercial and passenger port near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, were struck during the exchanges.
Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin reported that a senior US official confirmed the US military carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm port and Bandar Abbas, while insisting the operation was “not a restarting of the war” or an end to the ceasefire. Griffin later reported that the US military also struck Iran’s Bandar Kargan naval checkpoint in Minab, citing a senior US official.
The developments come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf after reports that Iran previously fired ballistic and cruise missiles at the UAE’s Fujairah Port. Iran had also tightened maritime control in the Strait of Hormuz, requiring ships to move through a designated corridor between Qeshm Island and Larak Island.
CENTCOM announced that the US intercepted Iranian missiles, drones, and boats in the Strait of Hormuz and struck Iranian launch sites and command centers in self-defense. No US ships were hit, CENTCOM update read.
"US forces intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with self-defense strikes as US Navy guided-missile destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman, May 7. Iranian forces launched multiple missiles, drones and small boats as USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), and USS Mason (DDG 87) transited the international sea passage. No US assets were struck.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking US forces including missile and drone launch sites; command and control locations; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes. CENTCOM does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces," CENTCOM wrote on X.
