Israel has confirmed its first case of hantavirus, health officials reported on May 7, 2026. The patient is believed to have contracted a European strain of the virus during a trip to Eastern Europe several months ago. The individual sought medical attention after developing symptoms. Diagnosis was confirmed through antibody testing followed by a PCR test. The patient is currently in stable condition, under medical observation, and has not required intensive care or strict isolation. The case has been reported to Israel’s Health Ministry.

Contrast with the Andes Strain Outbreak on theMV Hondius

While the Israeli patient was infected with a common European strain — which spreads almost exclusively from rodents to humans — the virus causing concern worldwide is the Andes strain from South America. This strain has shown limited person-to-person transmission and is responsible for the deadly outbreak on the MV Hondius

.The expedition ship departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1 with around 147 passengers and crew from 23 countries. It traveled through Antarctica and remote South Atlantic islands before severe respiratory illnesses emerged on board.

Global Contact Tracing Effort Underway

Health authorities, airlines, and the ship’s operator (Oceanwide Expeditions) are working urgently to trace passengers and their close contacts.

Passengers disembarked at various points, including St. Helena, from where many flew to Johannesburg and onward to other countries. This dispersal has triggered a complex international response:

The World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated that the overall risk to the general public remains low, as the virus does not spread easily through casual contact.

Hantavirus is a family of viruses primarily transmitted by rodents through urine, droppings, and saliva. Humans become infected by inhaling airborne particles from dried secretions or touching contaminated surfaces and then their face.

Symptoms often start flu-like (fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches) and can progress to severe lung or kidney complications depending on the strain. There is no specific antiviral treatment — care is supportive, and early medical attention is critical.
