Iranian state media reported Thursday that Iranian forces launched missiles at “enemy units” in the Strait of Hormuz following what officials described as a US attack on an Iranian tanker in the strategic waterway.
According to Iran’s IRIB broadcaster, citing a military official, Iranian forces opened fire after the alleged tanker strike, claiming the targeted “enemy units” sustained damage and withdrew from the area. The report did not provide details on the extent of the damage or identify the vessels involved.
The US is yet to confirm/deny/respond to Iran's allegations.
Israeli journalist Doron Kadosh, reporting for IDF military radio, said Israeli officials believe Iran recently targeted US missile destroyers following a US operation against Iranian tanker vessels in the region. He added that Israel was “closely monitoring the developments” amid rising tensions in the Gulf.
An Israeli source also told Israel Hayom that an exchange of fire had taken place between Iran and the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important oil transit routes.
The reports come amid escalating military activity near Iran’s southern coastline, including explosions and reported drone interceptions near Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island. Independent confirmation of the alleged confrontation between Iranian and U.S. forces was not immediately available.
