Chennai:In a major political development inTamil Naduamid deepening stalemate over government formation, all 108 MLAs of “Thalapathy” Vijay’s TVK party threatened to resign if the DMK and AIADMK attempt to stake claim to form the government in the state, sources told Times Now.
The sources claimed that the TVK’s decision comes amid the DMK authorising MK Stalin to take emergency decisions amid a lack of majority for the TVK. Vijay’s party suspects that the AIADMK and DMK are working together to stop its bid for government formation.
Earlier in the day, reports also surfaced that Vijay's legal team is considering the previous scenario of Karnataka, where the government was allowed to be formed after the BJP emerged as the single largest party. In the span of 24 hours, the actor-turned-politician met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar twice. The Governor asked Vijay to prove numbers before staking claim to form the government.

“Thiru Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, has invited Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, President, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, today (7.5.2026) to Lok Bhavan, Chennai. During the meeting, the Hon’ble Governor explained that the requisite majority support in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, essential for forming the government, has not been established,” the statement by the Lok Bhavan read.
The TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, still short of 10 seats for the majority mark. The DMK and the AIADMK bagged 5 and 47 seats, respectively.
Notably, the Congress, an ally of the DMK, which has won five seats, extended its support to the TVK. However, even after the Congress’s support, Vijay has 112 MLAs with him. The effective strength of the TVK will reduce to 107, as Vijay, who contested two seats, has to vacate one of them.
The TVK leader had also reportedly approached other allies of the DMK—the CPI, the CPIM, and the VCK—for support. Now, the CPI, the CPIM, and the VCK have two seats each. After the support of these three parties, the TVK will achieve the majority mark.
