Chennai:As the deadlock over the Tamil Nadu government formation deepens, “Thalapathy” Vijay’sTamilaga Vettri Kazhagam(TVK) is exploring legal options after the state Governor, Rajendra Arlekar, asked the actor-turned-politician to prove majority. Sources told Times Now that Vijay is taking suggestions of possible legal options from senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi in this matter.

The sources said that Vijay's legal team is considering the previous scenario of Karnataka, where the government was allowed to be formed after the BJP emerged as the single largest party. Discussions are currently underway.

Congress has also condemned the governor's role for not calling Vijay to form the government. Congress General Secretary in charge Girish Chodankar told Times Now that legal options and political options are all being considered.

If Vijay’s party moved the court, there is a possibility that it might not get immediate relief. Simultaneously, it has to get the required numbers so that he can prove majority during the floor test. The TVK is also in contact with the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India—Marxist (CPIM) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) for getting support. TVK’s CTI Nirmal Kumar went to the offices of the CPI and the CPM and gave them formal letters of support. Vijay’s party is hoping to hear back with them in the next 24 to 48 hours from those political parties.Tamil Nadu Government Formation 2026 Live

Speaking on the matter, Singhvi told news agency ANI, "The governor who is to be the repository of constitutional wisdom, has no alternative but to call the single largest party in Tamil Nadu to form the government.”

“It has happened umpteen times in the past. Also, no other formation has even staked a claim. The shortage is barely 7-8 seats, plus the governor always will be stipulating that the floor of the house will prove the majority in 10-12 days,” he added.

How Can Vijay’s TVK Achieve The Majority Mark?

The TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats. However, the effective strength of the TVK will reduce to 107 after Vijay vacates one of the seats he contested. The Congress has also decided to support the TVK, taking the numbers to 112. Now, the CPI, the CPIM and the VCK have two seats each. After the support of these three parties, the TVK will achieve the majority mark.

Meanwhile, reports also surfaced that the DMK (59) and the AIADMK (47) are also in talks to form an alliance.
