So far, Texas and Florida are the only states to have given the Terror designation to CAIR, which bills itself as a civil rights groups and lobbying group for Islam.
Last June,H. R. 4097(a.k.a. ‘Designate CAIR as a TerroristOrganization Act’) was introduced in the House and moved to judiciary. It cited historical and recent events that give reason to believe CAIR should be designated, at the federal level, a Terrorist organization, beginning with their role as unindicted co-conspirator in what was, and still is, the largest terror financing trial in US history, involving sending $12M dollars to Hamas.
Not surprisingly, they contest being characterized in such a way. Such disagreements are for others to wrangle over. It is sufficient to say that is one of many data points driving efforts to not only strip CAIR of their status and influence in America, but to outlaw them entirely as a hostile entity.
While there has been no movement on that case at the federal level, Texas and Florida did not sit around and wait for Congress to get the lead out. They took leadership roles on making the same move at their respective State levels.
CAIR is very active in those states and such a designation would make it impossible for them to advance their various objectives there. So they litigated, attempting to block Abbott’s designation.
Of course, that creates an opportunity for legal discovery. Their financial activities, donor lists, and associations are entirely relevant to the question of them being a terror group. The donors and associations could settle the question about whether they are, in fact, a terror organization.
And the court has now ordered CAIR to turn over that information.
