New Delhi:The suspense over government formation inTamil Naducontinues as actor-turned-politician Vijay on Thursday once again approached Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar seeking an invitation to form the government. According to Times Now sources, Vijay informed the Governor that his party has the numbers required to prove a majority on the assembly floor and submitted another detailed report backing the claim.

The move comes a day after Vijay met the Governor and formally staked claim to form the government after the Congress announced support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), ending its alliance with the DMK in a major political realignment.

Vijay met the Governor on Wednesday and formally staked claim to form the government after the Congress announced support to TVK

TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election by winning 108 out of 234 seats, breaking the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state.

However, the party still remains short of the majority mark. With Congress’ five seats, TVK’s tally reaches 112. Since Vijay won from both Perambur and Trichy East, he will have to vacate one seat, reducing TVK’s effective tally to 107 and the majority mark to 117.

Sources at the Raj Bhavan indicated that no final decision has yet been taken on inviting Vijay to form the government, suggesting the Governor is still assessing TVK’s support claims.

Criticising the delay, Congress MP Jothimani said the majority should be tested only in the Assembly.

"The BJP must immediately stop playing politics via the Lok Bhavan. The Governor should immediately invite TVK leader Vijay to form the government," she said.

Meanwhile, Congress formally confirmed that it would be part of a TVK-led government. AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar said the alliance with TVK would continue beyond government formation.

“This alliance -founded on mutual respect, appropriate share, and shared responsibility between the two parties- is not only for the formation of this government but also for future elections to local body organisations, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha,” he said.
