Hyundai Mobis has developed a 160-kilowatt (kW) power electric system for general-purpose electric vehicles (EVs), in a move to build a wider drive system lineup covering various types of EVs, the company said Thursday.

The auto parts maker already completed development for its high-performance 250-kW PE system and plans to do the same for a 120-kW power electric system tailored for small mobility vehicles by the first half this year. Upon its completion, the company will be able to cover power electric systems for all types of EVs.

The power electric system is considered a core auto component equivalent to the powertrain of an internal combustion engine. The system consists of a motor, inverter and reduction gear.

Hyundai Mobis focused on standardizing key auto components and modularizing them during the development of its proprietary system. These include the stator for the drive motor, the inverter, and the power module, which is a bundle of power semiconductors.

This modularized power electric system offers advantages in terms of scalability, as it can be applied to various vehicle models through a platform-like approach. This is more efficient than the strategy of developing a new powertrain for each new vehicle launch. As the number of EV models increases, this approach is expected to be advantageous for future mass production.

Hyundai Mobis will proactively propose the power electric system to its global customers. The company already secured orders for battery systems from its global clients, but the latest development will allow the firm to expand its electrification portfolio into the powertrain sector, according to the company.

The newly developed system has a maximum output of 160 kilowatts — equivalent to 215 horsepower in internal combustion engines. The figure is suitable for most EVs currently in mass production, according to Hyundai Mobis. If two systems are installed on the front and rear axles, the maximum output is doubled.

“Hyundai Mobis will soon have a complete lineup of drive systems covering all types of EVs, from small mobility solutions to high-performance cars,” an official from the company said. “This will not only enable the firm to meet the diverse needs of its customers, but also allow for a differentiated product strategy tailored to specific purposes.”
